Bob Reid has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a print and broadcast journalist, television producer and director and cable television executive.
As Executive Vice President and General Manager of The Africa Channel (TAC), Reid is the Chief Editorial Executive for the company. He is responsible for the overall editorial direction and strategic planning of the company’s television networks and website. In addition, Reid oversees the networks programming, production, marketing and general operations.
Prior to joining TAC, Reid was Executive Vice President and General Manager of Discovery Health Channel. In that position, he was the Chief Editorial Executive, with responsibility for the strategic development and execution of programming and production strategies, as well as the day-to-day programming and production operations. Under his leadership, Discovery Health Channel experienced dynamic growth, increasing its distribution from 26 million to more than 50 million homes nationwide. During his tenure, Reid oversaw the development and served as Executive-in-Charge of Production for the network's history making, live, 10-hour programming event, Birth Day Live.
In January 2004, under Reid's leadership, Discovery Health Channel brought together The US Department of Health and Human Services, Discovery Channel Retail, Bally Total Fitness and the American Dietetic Association to stage the first ever Discovery Health National Body Challenge, which enrolled more than 300,000 Americans from around the country in a 12 week healthy weight loss and fitness program.
While at Discovery Health Channel, Reid was instrumental in securing partnerships with leading non-profit health organizations, such as the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes and the American Psychological Association. He also spearheaded the creation of Discovery Health Channel Medical Honors, an unprecedented gala event and television program honoring the nation's top medical and scientific achievers.
Prior to joining Discovery Health Channel in 2001, Reid oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Discovery Channel primetime production team as vice president of Production, where he managed a slate of more than 500 hours of programs in production. A non-fiction television veteran who joined Discovery Channel in 1997, Reid served as Executive Producer for numerous programs, including: Discovery News, Discovery's two time EMMY award-winning weekly primetime science newscast ; Vietnam Pows: Stories Of Survival, which won Discovery Channel's first Primetime Emmy Award as best nonfiction special; and many of Discovery Channel's live programs, such as Titanic Live , Twister Week , Live From A Shark Cage and Mars Live!
Prior to his experience in cable television, Reid has spent more than 24 years in television news and production. During that time, he ran network news bureaus for three of the country’s top media companies: Fox, CBS and NBC News. For his news production, he has won an Emmy Award, a RTNDA International award and an Alfred I. duPont Award for investigative producing at KNXT-TV (now KCBS) in Los Angeles. Reid's production credits include, Front Page for Fox; B.E.T. Fashion Preview 92: Africa to America for Black Entertainment Television; Entertainment Tonight, Rescue 911 and the nationally syndicated Inside Video This Week.
Reid has served as past President (1979-1981) of the National Association of Black Journalists, as well as, past Co-chairperson (1995-1997) of the Directors Guild of America African American Steering Committee.
Reid has a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Miami and taught Advanced Television Production at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of Southern California from 1991 until 1997.
Working in collaboration with veteran rock guitarist and singer John Berenzy, Reid has recorded and released an album of original Blues music entitled "Trouble in Paradise".
